Domestic violence is more complicated than your spouse physically attacking you, though that can certainly be a part of it. Abusive marriages and abusive relationships are all about power and control. If you feel that your situation is unsafe or abusive, contact The National Domestic Violence Hotline today at 1-800-799-7233. Now we’re going to talk a bit about what domestic violence is and what you can do to find peace.

The Role of Power in Domestic Violence

Domestic violence, as mentioned, is about power and control. The abusive partner in the relationship will use a variety of tactics to gain and then maintain that control over their victim. They may do this with physical violence, scare tactics, emotional manipulation, financial control, sexual abuse, and other cruel actions.

When most people think of domestic violence, they think of being hit. However, this is not always the case. A partner that tells you that they will kill themselves if you leave them, for example, is abusive. A partner that won’t let you see your friends and family is abusive. A partner that won’t let you get a job or have your own income is abusive. A partner that pressures you into doing things you aren’t comfortable doing is abusive.

We say “partner” because domestic violence can happen to anyone in any kind of relationship regardless of gender, sexual orientation, age, or race. If you feel that your relationship may be abusive or unhealthy, there are resources available to you in your community and online.

What Do I Do?

Contact community resources and talk to them about your situation. They can help you determine whether or not your partner is being abusive and they can help you with the next step you need to take. When the time comes to file for divorce, or to seek a protective order, we’ll be here to help you.

Remain calm and keep yourself safe above all things. You are not alone. There are so many people out there who want to help you; all you need to do is ask.
